The pasuk says “ועתה ישראל מה ה’ אלקיך שאל מעמך כי אם ליראה את ה’ אלקיך ללכת בכל דרכיו ולאהבה אתו ולעבוד את ה’ אלקיך בכל לבבך ובכל נפשך”.
What does Hashem ask from you? Only to fear Hashem, go in His ways, love Him, serve Him whole heartedly, and to keep His laws.
Five things are written here:
A. To fear Him.
B. To go in His ways.
C. Love Him.
D. Serve Him whole heartedly.
E. Keep His laws.
The author explains each one. We’ll start with the fear of Hashem.
The fear we are obligated to have is just like one would have if he would speak to a king. How much would a person think before saying words out of his mouth and how careful he would be with every move that he makes.
We need to realize that unless you seek out this fear similar to looking for gold and money, we aren’t going to get it. Fear of Hashem doesn’t come naturally to a person. The pasuk says “אם תבקשנה ככסף וכמטמונים, אז תבין יראת ה”. In order to demonstrate this think of how hard it is in the business world to make money and how much effort is needed. It takes that much effort to find yirat shamayim.
But where do we look? The answer is on the next pasuk: “הן יראת ה’ היא חכמה”. This indicates that yirat Hashem is a wisdom and wisdom must be studied in depth on a regular basis.
