I heard there is a problem of erasing Shem Hashem on an e-ink e-reader. Is this true?
Many poskim are of the opinion that there is no problem of erasing Hashem’s name on any electronic device which displays Hashem’s name in a “virtual” means. There is no authentic halachic writing to constitute a destructive act of Hashem’s name, which is the defining factor of this prohibition. Even e-readers which use e-ink are included in this, that although it is more “permanent” than other forms of screens in that it doesn’t need a constant power supply to power the screen, this is not significant with regards to this prohibition.
