Shabbat Foods as Mishloach Manot When Purim Falls on Friday

Question

This year Purim falls on Friday. Are we yotzei mishloach manot by giving foods from a Shabbat menu?

Answer

Yes, it’s fine.

Sources

The Shulchan Aruch says that on Purim one must send a friend “two portions of meat, or foodstuffs.” The only requirement is that the gift be food. Nothing says the food has to be eaten on Purim itself, so food that will be part of the recipient’s Shabbat meal still counts as mishloach manot.

  • Shulchan Aruch, Orach Chaim 695:4 — one must send his fellow two portions of meat or other foods. The requirement is food portions, with no condition on when they are eaten.

Answer: It doesn’t matter. As I said, we all fast today. That is the psak of the Mishnah Berurah, except for those who want to be lenient, and this is the minhag.
