Kashering a Stainless Steel Sink for Pesach with a Steamer

Question

Can I kasher a stainless steel sink for Pesach with a steamer?

Answer

Hagala is better.

Sources

The Shulchan Aruch rules that vessels are kashered according to how they were used. A vessel used with hot liquid poured directly from a pot on the fire (kli rishon) cannot be kashered by the weaker method used for a kli sheni. Instead, boiling water must be poured over it straight from a kli rishon. A sink receives hot water poured into it, so the method the Shulchan Aruch prescribes is pouring boiling water. This is why hagala is preferable to a steamer.

  • Shulchan Aruch, Orach Chaim 451:5 — a vessel used with hot liquid poured from a kli rishon must be kashered by pouring boiling water over it from a kli rishon
