How to check leeks for bugs

Does it need checking? Yes. Leek is sometimes infested in the USA, and mostly infested in Israel. (Rav Moshe Vaya) Leeks tend to have bugs inside, between the layers.

Rav Vaya’s rating

USA★sometimes infested (mi’ut hamatzui)
Israel★★mostly infested (muchzak b’negiut)

Which bugs

  • Bugs can hide inside the leek, between the layers (a “pipe within a pipe”).
  • The upper leaves tend to be dirtier.

How to check

  1. Cut off the roots.
  2. Slice the leek in half lengthwise. This opens the layers that sit one inside the other.
  3. Soak in water with soap for 3 to 5 minutes. Open the layers so the water gets in. Do not soak longer, or the leek will taste of soap.
  4. Wash each piece under a stream of water. Whatever is there will fall out. If you see dirt, rub it with your fingers.
  5. Clean the upper leaves the same way. They tend to be dirtier.
  6. Afterwards, check that everything is clean.
