Does Flavored Nespresso Coffee Need to Be Kosher for Passover?

Question

Does flavored Nespresso coffee have to be kosher for Passover?

Answer

Yes, flavored Nespresso coffee has to be kosher for Passover.

Sources

Flavored coffee needs Passover certification because of a basic rule about chametz in mixtures. The Gemara rules (Rava) that chametz during Pesach, mixed with its own kind or another kind, is forbidden in any amount (b’mashehu). The Rambam and the Shulchan Aruch codify this: chametz mixed into something else on Pesach forbids the whole mixture even in the slightest amount. Unlike other prohibitions, it is not nullified in sixty. So even a trace of chametz in the flavoring would make the coffee forbidden. That is why flavored coffee must be kosher for Passover.

  • Shulchan Aruch, Orach Chaim 447:1 — chametz on Pesach forbids its mixture, whether of its kind or not, in any amount (b’mashehu), and is not nullified in sixty as other prohibitions are
  • Rambam Hilchot Chametz uMatzah 1:5 — chametz that becomes mixed with another substance during Pesach, of its kind or not, forbids the mixture in any amount
  • Gemara Pesachim 30a — Rava: the halacha is that chametz in its time, whether mixed with its own kind or another kind, is forbidden b’mashehu
