On Tisha B’Av, if tefillin are put on at Mincha, should I pray the Mincha Amidah wearing Rashi tefillin? If so, I may not have enough time to put on Rabbenu Tam tefillin before sunset.
Praying Mincha on Tisha B’Av With Rabbenu Tam Tefillin
Question
Answer
You can pray Mincha while wearing Rabbenu Tam tefillin.
Sources
The Kaf HaChaim and the Eliyah Rabbah both cite the Rama MiPano (Responsa 107). He rules that on Tisha B’Av, those who normally wear both Rashi and Rabbenu Tam tefillin put on only Rashi in the morning. At Mincha they put on both pairs. The Levushei Serad, citing the Peri Megadim, likewise states that those accustomed to wear Rabbenu Tam tefillin should also wear them at Mincha on Tisha B’Av. So the Tisha B’Av Mincha is prayed with Rabbenu Tam tefillin on.
On the general practice, the Machatzit HaShekel writes that both pairs should be on a person during Shema and the Amidah. It does not matter which pair is put on first, since either way both will be on him during the prayer. One therefore need not pray in Rashi alone and add Rabbenu Tam only afterward.
- Kaf HaChaim, Orach Chaim 555:3 — citing the Rama MiPano: on Tisha B’Av put on only Rashi tefillin in the morning, and at Mincha put on both pairs.
- Eliyah Rabbah, Orach Chaim 555:1 — those who wear both pairs wear only Rashi at Shacharit and both at Mincha (Rama MiPano).
- Levushei Serad, Orach Chaim 555:1 — those accustomed to wear Rabbenu Tam tefillin should also wear them on Tisha B’Av at Mincha (Peri Megadim).
- Machatzit HaShekel, Orach Chaim 34:4 — both pairs should be on him during Shema and the Amidah, regardless of which is put on first.
