Ch. 10, Halacha 7 – Saying Tehillim with a Tzibbur in a Mourner’s House

When Tehillim is recited with a tzibbur in the house of a mourner, one may say the “Yehi Ratzon” and the Thirteen Attributes (of Mercy) that follow it.

Sources and Explanations

Nit’ei Gavriel (Aveilut, chapter 98, ot 10) writes that this appears to be correct, since it does not have the status of Tachanun but is rather an arousal of mercy. The proof is that in the order of hakafot (circuits) performed at the burial, the Thirteen Attributes are recited. Similarly, Siddur HaShelah has selichot that the author of the Shelah instituted to be recited in all the batei midrash in Tiberias and Safed during the seven days of his mourning, and the entire recitation of selichot was instituted on the basis of the Divine Names and the Thirteen Attributes of Mercy.
