A woman should not recite Tehillim aloud among men, and especially if they are singing mizmorim, she should refrain from letting her voice be heard in a way that others would hear it.
Sources and Explanations
In the sefer Shemesh UMagen (vol. 4, siman 73), the question was asked whether women in the women’s section (ezrat nashim) of the synagogue are permitted to sing with the men at the time when they are singing, such as on the Yamim Nora’im (High Holy Days), when the men near the women’s section hear their voices. He replied that it is obvious that they should not raise their voices and let them be heard, even if they are singing together with the men. Therefore, they should see to it that they sing quietly, in a manner that is not heard by the men.
