Question

If a husband is out of town on the day his wife needs to go to the mikvah, does she go that day or wait until he returns?

Answer

She should go to the mikvah right before he returns.

The Shulchan Aruch says that immersing on time is a mitzvah specifically “if her husband is in town,” so as not to lose even one night of the mitzvah of having children. This implies that when he is away, there is no reason to immerse on the scheduled night. The Rema also speaks of a woman who did not immerse because her husband was not in town and he came home on Friday. That shows her immersion is timed to his return.

  • Shulchan Aruch, Yoreh De’ah 197:2 — the mitzvah to immerse on time applies when the husband is in town; the Rema discusses a woman who waited because her husband was away and immersed when he came back

My wife is on birth control (approved by a Rabbi) and when she takes a break after 6 weeks her period isn’t a normal flow. Rather she only stains and it never become a classic period that she would get if not on birth control. When does a stain on colored undergarments become halachically a flow and make her into…

Answer: Hi, The general rule is that if she sees either: Two fingers worth of blood in a pad three times in a day OR Three fingers worth of blood on a pad once in a day then you can assume her period started, otherwise she is tehora. However, even if she is tehora you should be careful since she is spotting. She can change her pad once every three or…

Family PurityMarital Relations during the Day

Is it permissible to have marital relations during the day?

Answer: The Gmara writes that Jews are holy as they are not intimate with their wives during the day. We see that it is not the appropriate thing to do. Under specific circumstances, there might be room to permit it, when the situation warrants it. It would be best to speak to a Rabbi who is familiar with your situation if you feel this is necessary for you. All the best…

Family PurityEstablishing a Vest Kavuah

My most recent haflaga was 35 days. Before that, I had a haflaga of 28 days for at least 5 times in a row. However in Elul I got it at night whereas in Tishrei, Cheshvon, and Kisleiv, I got it by day. Therefore I am assuming that I did NOT establish a regular pattern. I am therefore assuming that…

Answer: Hello! You did establish a  pattern for 28, since you saw a haflaga of 28 days three times in a row (tishrei, cheshvon, kislev). Therefore, this month you need to keep haflaga of 28 by day (the established pattern you had), plus you need to keep both the haflaga and yom chodesh of your most recent vest (35 days plus whichever day of the month it was). Please let us…

I’m trying to keep Hilchot Niddah and I don’t know what’s included. I’m on birth control for a few months and just went on to the placebo pills. I started staining and it’s light brown and very little. Is my husband allowed to touch me? Can he see me undressed? Please explain it to me

Answer: Hello, I appreciate you asking this question, it is not easy to keep hilchot niddah, and especially during the uncertain parts of the lifecycle it can be difficult keep the halachot properly. Whatever the situation, one should always have an open and intimate emotional relationship with their spouse. Spotting, when the stain is not red, it does not make a woman a niddah. A flow of blood is only considered…

Family PurityMode of Dress For Husband and Wife

Blunt and straightforward: but I need clear answers Do husband and wife have to be covered when undressed? Besides for in the pool or in bathroom, where I know it’s allowed… When you’re just in the mood of loving… Do you always have to remain under covers if you’re undressed??

Answer: Your question is a very good one. There is a mitzvah for both men and women to be tzanua – to act modestly. The Sma”k, one of the rishonim, rules that this mitzvah is one of the 613 mitzvos deoraisa. The mitzvah to be modest is best defined as a positive commandment to act with dignity and self respect at all times, and differs per the situation. How to be dignified is subjective, it wouldn’t be undignified for a…
