If I cooked zucchini uncovered and chicken covered at the same time in the oven, is the zucchini considered meat, and do I have to wait 6 hours after eating the zucchini before eating dairy?
Waiting After Zucchini Baked in the Oven With Covered Chicken
Question
Answer
There is no need to wait after eating the zucchini.
Sources
The Shulchan Aruch rules that when foods are roasted in the same oven and one of them is covered, they do not affect each other, even in a small, closed oven. The Rema adds that the same applies to meat and dairy. Since the chicken was covered, the zucchini did not take on meat status.
The Rema also writes that if a dish has no meat in it and was only cooked in a meat pot, one may eat cheese after it, and there is no custom to be strict. So there is no need to wait after eating the zucchini.
- Shulchan Aruch, Yoreh De’ah 108:1 — if one of the foods is covered, they may be roasted together even in a small, closed oven; the Rema adds that the same rule applies to meat and milk
- Shulchan Aruch, Yoreh De’ah 89:3 — Rema: a dish with no meat in it, only cooked in a meat pot, may be followed by cheese, and there is no custom to be strict
